A three-story under-construction building collapsed near Chawri Bazar Metro Station in Old Delhi on Thursday morning. Several people are feared trapped beneath the debris. Upon receiving information, the fire brigade and rescue teams rushed to the spot and launched a search and rescue operation.

How Did the Incident Occur?

The accident took place in 'Gali Sitara' near the Chawri Bazar Metro Station.

According to officials, the incident was reported at around 9:50 AM.

As the building collapsed, a loud blast-like sound echoed and a massive cloud of dust engulfed the area.

Since the locality is narrow and heavily congested, panic broke out. Local residents immediately notified the police and the fire control room.

The exact cause behind the building collapse is yet to be ascertained.

Relief and Rescue Operations

At least 6 fire tenders were dispatched to the scene, including water tenders and specialized rescue vehicles.

Senior officials are present at the site supervising the rescue operation.

Teams are carefully clearing the rubble to safely extract any trapped individuals as quickly as possible.

Political Allegations: AAP Targets Government and MCD

AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj leveled serious allegations against the Rekha Gupta government and the MCD on X.

He questioned why buildings continue to collapse repeatedly despite multiple safety audits being ordered.

He alleged that while audit orders are routinely issued, no concrete action takes place on the ground, and officials are merely collecting bribes.

He claimed that the MCD seals shops or properties only belonging to those who refuse to pay bribes. As an example, he cited the sealing of two gyms in GK-2 market within a South Zone ward, whereas other gyms and commercial buildings in the same area continue to operate uninterrupted.
