It is narrated from Hazrat Sayyiduna Wahb bin Munabbih (may Allah have mercy on him):
A devout worshipper (abid) of Bani Israel had been engaged in worship in his place of worship for a very long time. He would perform spiritual striving (mujahadat) and always stay away from sins. Seeing his worship and piety, Shaitan’s minions came to Iblis and said: “So-and-so has made us helpless; we have not gotten any share from him.”
Hearing this nonsense from his wretched minions, the accursed Iblis resolved to mislead that worshipper, and reaching his place of worship, he knocked at the door. The worshipper asked: “Who is it?”
Iblis said: “I am a traveler. Give me shelter with you tonight.”
The worshipper said: “There is a settlement very close to here, go there.”
Iblis said: “Fear God, I am a traveler, I am in danger from wild beasts and thieves, where will I wander about so late at night?” The worshipper said: “I will never open the door.”
Hearing this, Iblis fell silent. After some time he knocked again and said: “Quickly open the door for me.” The worshipper asked: “Who is it?”
He said: “I am the Messiah (that is, Isa, peace be upon him).” (May Allah Almighty protect us)
The worshipper said: “If you are the Messiah, then what need do you have of me? You have already attained the message of your Lord and the promise of the Hereafter.”
The accursed Iblis fell silent again. After some time, his satanic nature stirred again, and he knocked at the door.
The worshipper asked: “Who is it?” He said: “I am Iblis.”
The worshipper said: “I will never open the door for you.”
The accursed Iblis said: “I implore you by God! I implore you by your Lord! Open the door.”
The accursed Iblis kept pleading and begging for a long time and made a firm promise that “I will never cause you any harm.” Finally, the worshipper opened the door. Iblis sat down in front of him and said:
“Ask me whatever you wish to ask, I will answer every question of yours.”
The worshipper said: “I have nothing to do with you.”
Hearing this, the accursed Iblis began to leave, so the worshipper called out to him and said: “I want to ask you something.”
The accursed Iblis came back and said: “Ask! What do you want to ask?”
He said: “What is the thing that helps you the most in the destruction of the children of Adam?”
Iblis said: “Intoxication is our most successful weapon, because when a person becomes intoxicated, we make him do whatever we want, and then he cannot escape us; we play with him the way children play with a ball.” The worshipper said: “What is the second destructive thing?”
He said: “Anger and rage are also our deadliest weapons. Even if a person reaches such a station and rank through worship that, by Allah’s command, he begins to raise the dead, we still do not lose hope in him; we hope that because of his anger and rage we will surely get some share from him.” The worshipper said: “Besides these, what other deadly weapon do you have?”
He said: “Miserliness is also our finest weapon. The blessings a person has, we make them appear small, and the wealth that others have, we make it appear greater in his eyes. In this way, he acts stingily in fulfilling the rights of Allah from his wealth and falls into the valleys of destruction.” (We seek Allah’s protection and safety) (Uyun al-Hikayat)
