The Miracle of the Pious Woodcutter and the True Light of Faith

The Miracle of the Pious Woodcutter and the True Light of Faith

Hazrat Dawud bin Rashid (R.A) narrates: "There lived two beautiful and devout young men in the land of Syria. Due to their abundant worship, piety, and righteousness, they were known by the names 'Sabih' and 'Malih'. They narrated one of their incidents like this: Once, hunger distressed us severely. I said to my companion, 'Come, let us go into a certain desert and teach someone some rulings of the true religion (Deen-e-Mateen) to take a step towards the betterment of our Hereafter.' Thus, we both set off towards the desert. There we met a dark-skinned man who had a bundle of firewood on his head. We said to him, 'Tell us! Who is your Lord?' Hearing this, he threw the bundle of firewood onto the ground, sat on it, and said, 'Do not ask me who your Lord is! Rather, ask in which corner of your heart faith (Iman) resides.' Hearing this mystical discourse from this villager, we both stared at each other's faces in astonishment. He addressed us again, 'Why have you become silent? Ask me, question me; indeed, a student does not refrain from asking questions.' We could not give any reply to his words and remained silent. When he saw our silence, he supplicated in the court of the Almighty like this: 'O my Pure Lord! You know well that there are some such servants of Yours that when they ask of You, You surely grant them. My Master! Turn these sticks of mine into gold.' He had barely uttered these words when all the wood turned into shining gold. Then he prayed again, 'O my Lord! Indeed, You love those servants of Yours who do not seek fame. My Master! Turn this gold back into wood.' As soon as his words ended, all that gold turned back into wood. He placed the bundle of wood on his head and departed in one direction. We remained standing frozen and completely still in our place, and no one had the courage to go after him. Though the external complexion of this pious servant of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala was dark, his inner self was illuminated and brightened with the light of gnosis (Ma'rifat) and faith (Iman)."
