A man had two wives, one dark-skinned (complexioned) and the other fair-skinned...

The man resolved to divorce one of them, so he arranged a poetry competition between them; the one who won would remain in his marriage.

Therefore, the dark-skinned wife said:

ألم ترى المسك لا شئ مثله

وأن بياض الملح بيع بدرهم

وأن سواد العين لا شك نورها

وأن بياض العين لا شيئ فاعلم

"Do you not see that musk (despite being black) is matchless,

While white salt is sold for just a dirham?

It is the blackness of the eye that contains its light,

And know well that the whiteness of the eye is of no use."

In response to this, the fair-skinned wife said:

ألم ترى أن البدر لا شئ مثله

وأن سواد الفحم بيع بدرهم

وأن رجال الله بيض وجوههم

ولا شك أن السواد أهل جهنم

"Have you not seen that the radiant full moon is matchless,

While black coal is sold for just a dirham?

The men of Allah have illuminated, white faces,

And there is no doubt that the dwellers of Hell will be black."

The man thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful and witty conversation, and he went on to marry a third woman with a wheatish (brown) complexion!
