A villager went to Hazrat Hussain bin Ali (R.A.), greeted him, and asked for his need to be fulfilled. He said, "I have heard from your grandfather (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), he said that when you ask anyone for a need, ask one of four (types of men):
Number 1: Either he should be a noble Arab
Number 2: Or a generous helper
Number 3: Or a bearer of the Quran
Number 4: Or one with a beautiful face
In any case, as for being an Arab, you have received that honor from your grandfather; and generosity, it has commenced from you and your character; and the Quran, it was revealed in your homes; and a beautiful face, I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'When you intend to look at me, look at Hasan and Hussain.' (Meaning, according to the Prophet's words, all these four qualities are found in you.)"
Hazrat Hussain (R.A.) asked, "What is your need?" So he wrote his need on the ground. Then Hazrat Hussain (R.A.) said, "I have heard my father Hazrat Ali (R.A.) say: 'The value of every man is as much as the good he does,' and I heard my grandfather say: 'Goodness is according to one's spiritual recognition (Ma'rifat).' Therefore, I will ask you three questions. If you answer one well, one-third (Thuluth) of what I have will be yours; if you answer two, two-thirds of what I have will be yours; and if you answer all three, everything available with me will be yours. And the situation is that a sealed bag (gift) has been sent to me from Iraq."
The villager said, "Please ask, and there is no power nor strength except with Allah (Wala hawla wala quwwata illa billah)."
Number 1: Hazrat Hussain asked, "What is the best among deeds?"
The bedouin said, "To believe in Allah (Iman)."
Number 2: Hazrat Hussain asked, "What is salvation for a servant from destruction?"
The bedouin said, "To trust in Allah (Tawakkul)."
Number 3: Hazrat Hussain asked, "Which thing adorns a man?"
The villager said, "Knowledge (Ilm) accompanied by forbearance (Burdbari)."
Number 4: Hazrat Hussain asked, "If he mistakenly loses this, then?"
The bedouin said, "Then wealth accompanied by generosity."
Hazrat Hussain asked, "If he mistakenly loses this too, then?"
The villager said, "Then poverty (Faqr) accompanied by patience (Sabr)."
Hazrat Hussain asked, "If he mistakenly loses this too, then?"
The bedouin said, "Then it is only lightning sent down from the sky that will burn him to ashes. (Meaning, then there is no way left for his survival.)"
Hazrat Hussain began to laugh at his correct answers and threw that bag towards him.
