In a tragic plane crash in Florida on Sunday, all nine people onboard a private jet, including the pilot, were killed. The aircraft crashed near a road in a residential area in South Florida, triggering a massive fire and a loud explosion. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has confirmed the deaths of all nine individuals.
How the Accident Happened:
The Learjet 60 had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was en route to the Bahamas.
Mid-flight, the aircraft suddenly plunged and crashed near a road in a residential area.
The impact created a large crater of fire on the street, and thick black smoke could be seen from miles away.
According to eyewitnesses, the plane came down just a short distance from residential homes. Initial reports indicate it did not crash directly into any house.
Motorists in nearby cars captured footage of the aircraft plummeting rapidly and turning into a fiery explosion.
Scene of the Accident:
The crash occurred in Palm Beach County near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North. The Sheriff's Office closed roads in both directions and urged residents to stay away. Firefighters and emergency crews rushed to the scene immediately. According to a woman working nearby, power in the area was knocked out for about two hours.
Investigation:
An FAA team is being dispatched to assist the NTSB with the investigation.
The cause of the crash remains unknown, and the identities of the victims have not yet been released.
According to Austin-Bergstrom Airport spokesperson Jim Reynolds, the aircraft was privately owned and bore the tail number N722BD.
