If you live in Uttar Pradesh and cross a toll plaza daily for work, business or studies, here is some welcome news. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has amended the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008. Under the new rule, from 1 November 2026, people living within a 20-kilometre radius of a toll plaza will be able to get an annual local pass. After that, they will not have to pay separately each time they cross the toll. Uttar Pradesh has a total of 135 NHAI toll plazas, so lakhs of people stand to benefit.
How much will the pass cost?
The fee will depend on where the toll plaza is located:
₹1,500 per year: The toll plaza is outside the limits of a municipality or local body.
₹3,000 per year: The toll plaza is within the limits of a municipality or local urban area.
Conditions to get the local pass
Your home must be within 20 km of the toll plaza concerned. You will need to provide address proof such as an Aadhaar card or another valid ID.
The facility is only for private vehicles used for personal purposes. Commercial vehicles such as taxis and trucks will not get the pass.
The vehicle must have an active and valid FASTag.
If a service road or alternative route to avoid the toll already exists on your route, the concessional pass will not be issued.
The pass will be valid only at the specific toll plaza for which it is made. It will not work at all tolls across the state.
Who will benefit?
Salaried employees, traders, students and daily up-down commuters living near toll plazas will save a big chunk of toll expenses. They will also be free from the hassle of repeated deductions.
