New Delhi: Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is not just an online payment platform in India today but has become an important part of people's daily lives. In recent days, there were rumors that the government may reintroduce the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on UPI transactions above ₹3000. However, the Finance Ministry has issued a clear statement rejecting these rumors. The government's official statement The Finance Ministry said that the claims of imposing MDR on UPI transactions are completely false, baseless and misleading. Such rumors create unnecessary fear and suspicion among the citizens. The government is committed to promoting digital payments through UPI. That is, you can transact as much as you want with UPI, there will be no additional charges. UPI popularity According to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), on June 10, 2025 alone, 634 million transactions were made through UPI, worth over ₹91,838 crore. In the first 10 days of June, over 634 crore transactions worth ₹8.98 lakh crore were transacted. UPI has left other banking systems like IMPS behind and is the digital payment system. The result is clear from the government's clarification that UPI users need not worry about any charges on transactions above ₹3000. This facility will remain free, which will further strengthen India's digital economy.
