Last December, one day when it was snowing heavily in England and everyone was gripped by the cold, I looked out of my office window and saw that one of my colleagues, out in this freezing wind, wearing gloves and holding a shovel in his hand, was clearing piles of snow from the path for the people. I kept watching him, shivering with astonishment. After a while, when I met him, I asked, "You are an engineer like me, then who assigned this tough job to you in this cold?" He smiled and replied, "This is my small good deed for today."
A few days ago, the dishwasher kept in the office kitchen broke down. As a result, piles of dishes started accumulating for the cleaning staff. At the end of the day, after finishing work, when I was about to go home, I saw a senior manager with her sleeves rolled up, scrubbing and washing all the dishes. Seeing my inquiring eyes, she smiled and addressed me, "This is my small good deed for today."
From countless such observations, I began to understand that a good deed is not just that I pray two extra rak'ahs of prayer or put a few rupees into a charity box, but a superior good deed is to look for opportunities where I can silently be of use to God's creation, and reduce someone's pain and suffering.
A few days ago, the elevator of our flats broke down, without which taking the trash downstairs was impossible. When I went out to throw away my home's trash, I saw that a neighbor lady had also kept a lot of her trash outside. I picked up her trash as well. Then, thinking that it shouldn't be difficult for the garbage collector, I tied those big bags of trash with knots. Obviously, my hands got dirty because of this. A young girl walking alongside looked at me in wonder, and involuntarily it came out of my mouth, "This is my small good deed for today."
