لَّا یَمَسُّهٗۤ اِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُوْنَؕ(۷۹)(سورۃ الواقعہ)
Translation
None touch it except those who are thoroughly purified. (79) (Asan Tarjuma-tul-Quran)
Meaning: According to the preferred exegesis, this refers to the angels, and an answer is being given to this doubt of the disbelievers: 'How can we be sure that the word of Allah Almighty is reaching us in its original form without any decrease or increase, and that no devil etc. has made any interference in it?' The answer given to this is that the Holy Quran is recorded in the Preserved Tablet (Lauh-e-Mahfuz) and no one besides the pure angels can even touch it. Although 'thoroughly purified' here refers to the angels, an indication towards this is also understood that just as in the celestial world only pure angels touch it, similarly in the world as well, only those people should touch it who are in a state of purity; accordingly, a prohibition has come in the Ahadith against touching the Holy Quran without wudhu (ablution).
