"Zaleel (disgraced) Sahib, shall I bring tea?"

The famous Sindhi writer, Amar Jaleel Sahib, hired a Bengali cook in Islamabad. Now obviously, the man made excellent food, but the accent of his language was a bit different.

Whenever guests arrived, he would ask with great respect:

"Zaleel Sahib! Shall I bring tea?"

The guests' eyes would pop out, and Jaleel Sahib's forehead would break into a sweat.

Jaleel Sahib gently explained to him many times,

"Son! I am Jaleel… not Zaleel!"

But the man, with full confidence, would say the same every time:

"Zaleel Sahib, do you need anything else?"

Jaleel Sahib got fed up. Finally, another Bengali friend gave some advice,

"The problem is that we Bengali people pronounce 'J' as 'Z' and 'Z' as 'J'. You should write down your name as 'Zaleel' and give it to him, he will automatically learn to say Jaleel."

A ray of hope shined. He immediately wrote on a paper: Zaleel

Now it became amazing! Whenever the cook called him, he would say:

"Jaleel Sahib! Shall I bring tea?"

But the tone was somewhat satirical, as if he was suppressing a laugh in his heart.

Now Jaleel Sahib's problem had doubled because:

"Earlier he used to call me 'Zaleel' but understood me as Jaleel. Now he calls me 'Jaleel' but understands me as Zaleel!"

The Unique Benefit of Reading

The Unique Benefit of Reading

Sheikh Salman al-Ouda writes in his book "Zanzana": Once I complained to my Sheikh: "I read a book but I don't remember anything from it." Thereupon, he gave me a date and said: "Here, chew this!" Then he asked me: "Have you grown bigger now?" I said: "No." He said: "But this date has assimilated into your body; thus, a part of it became flesh, some became bone, some muscle, some skin, some hair, some nails, and pores, etc." Then I realized that every book I read gets assimilated; thus, a part of it strengthens my vocabulary, some increases my knowledge, some refines my morals, and some develops my style of writing and speaking, even though I may not actively perceive it. There is a Chinese proverb: "When a man reads 10 books, he travels 10,000 miles." Gorch Fock says about books: "Good books are not those that satisfy our hunger, but good books are those that increase our hunger... the hunger to know life..."
